What is a catalog / stock item?

Catalog items, also referred to as "stock" items, refer to a specific product or reagent in our system. Each stock item has a unique item code and description similar to a SKU#. Companies use stock items to manage inventory levels and reorder supplies.

Eurofins Genomics partners with many companies to create stock items for their products. Client can order these stock items as off-the-shelf product.

How are stock items used?

Stock items are reagents. Many commercial companies develop custom assays or oligo pools to use as a reagent in an instrument or test. Once the oligo product is validated, it transitions from R&D to production on the client side, and from a custom item to a stock item on the supplier side. Converting the product to a stock item makes it easier for the client to reorder supplies and manage inventory levels.

What is the difference between ordering a stock item versus custom oligos?

The sequences do not change for stock items and the material is reordered on a periodic basis as part of a refill order.

Custom oligos are uniquely made for each order. Each custom oligo contains many different components which indicate to the lab how to produce it. A few examples of these components are the bases, purification, and modifications. Each component has a unique item ID, and this allows us to automate a highly customized, complex process.

For large clients, managing so many components for one product would be too complicated. They need a simple way to manage inventory. For this reason, all the various sub-components of the oligo(s) are converted into a single stock item which they can reorder easily.

In conclusion, stock items make it simpler for the client to store, stock, and reorder critical reagents without having to manage all the parts that go into them.

How will a stock item appear on my invoice?

Stock items and custom items look different on invoices. Stock items typically appear as a single line item. The product code and description match the client's specifications so the purchase order and invoice match.

Depending on the type of custom oligo, the individual components may appear as separate line items on the invoice. This provides a more granular view of parts and prices.
